Shadow AI refers to the use of artificial intelligence tools, models, and services by employees within an organization without the knowledge, approval, or governance of IT, security, or management teams. Similar to shadow IT, where employees adopt unauthorized software, shadow AI involves individuals and teams independently using AI chatbots, code generators, image tools, and automation platforms to boost their productivity, often bypassing data security policies and creating compliance risks the organization does not even know exist.
